Stephen Delaney

Biography

Stephen Delaney was born in Sydney. He completed a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at the University of Sydney, studying under Neta Maughan and graduating with high distinction. He continued his studies in Vienna at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst and later at the Vienna Conservatorium of Music. He completed his Diploma at the Conservatorium specialising in accompaniment, again graduating with high distinction. He then became a member of the faculties of both the Vienna Conservatorium of Music and the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, working as a vocal coach.

Stephen Delaney has played and taught been engaged to teach at various Austrian festivals and master classes, notably including working with Gundula Janowitz at the Schubertiade Festival (Schwarzenberg), the Gutensteiner Cartusianer Festival and the Allegro Vivo Festival (Horn). Mr Delaney is also musical director of the Viennese theatre ensemble L.E.O., where he has been responsible for productions of Donizetti's Rita, Mozart's Bastien und Bastienne, many music theatre productions and the world premieres of three operas by Italian composer Marco Pontini: Der Gast, Der Bär and Die Schädlichkeit des Tabakrauchens. He has also assisted in productions for the Wiener Taschenoper.

As a specialist in the field of vocal accompaniment, Stephen Delaney has worked with many well-known artists, including Gundula Janowitz with whom he performed several song recitals in the season 2000-1. He has appeared at the Vienna Festival, Banff Chamber Music Festival (Canada), Royaumont Festival (France), La Strada Festival (Graz), Classics in the City Festival (Graz), Herbert von Karajan Centre (Vienna), Festivale di Musica Perugia (Italy), Haydn Festival (Austria), Swiss Global Artistic Foundation (Switzerland, France and England) and the Opera Festival Italia (Urbania).

Stephen Delaney is also active as a chamber musician and soloist and has appeared across Europe, Australia, North America and Japan.
