Thomas Herzog

Biography

The Swiss conductor with Hungarian roots was born in Basel in 1972. He studied percussion, conducting and composition.

In 1997 he won First Prize in the "Concours pour jeunes compositeurs" held by the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. Since 2002 he has been the conductor of the traditional New Year's Concert at the Basle Musiksaal. He has led rehearsals as an assistant conductor for Pierre Boulez, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. Early in his career Thomas Herzog was already a guest conductor with the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie, the Wuerttemberg Philharmonic, the Baden-Baden Philharmonic, Sinfonieorchester Basel, the Orchester Musikkollegium Winterthur, the Balearic Symphony Orchestra, the Cyprus State Orchestra and has also appeared with the Lehar Festival Bad Ischl as well as with many orchestras in Hungary and Latin America.

He has collaborated with soloists such as Elena Mosuc, Noemi Nadelmann, Eva Lind, Keiko Abe, Nina Corti and Los Romeros. He has served as artistic director of the Basle Festival Orchestra for many years. Thomas Herzog has devoted much of time to performing Spanish music, in particular the zarzuela. Radio broadcasts for SWR and Swiss Radio DRS bear witness to his gifts as an interpreter of contemporary music. He also enjoys performing ballet repertoire and French music of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
